Arboriculture & Urban Forestry 47(5): September 2021 219 Figure 2. Weather conditions over the 2-year period of the study (2018 to 2019). Solar radiation (orange)(W m˗2 m˗3 ). ) and precipitation (blue)(mm) are in the first panel, maximum daily soil temperature (black) and air temperature (red)(°C) are in the second panel, and volumetric soil water content is in the third (m3 season growth may have occurred prior to the start of this experiment and thus be absent from the record, and the two white spruce trees grew enough to satu- rate the dendrometer signal by end of the 2019 grow- ing season (Figure 3A and 3B). Across the growing seasons, the ZG model (expected to be very sensitive to short-term fluctuations) identified 6,096 growth periods (mean duration 13.6 minutes, standard devia- tion 15.4 minutes), and the HMM results then consol- idated these to 843 growth periods (mean duration 152.5 minutes, standard deviation 205.4 minutes). The basal area increments added to these trees were 36.9, 42.8, and 46.7 cm2 (for Spruce 1, Spruce 2, and Cedar, respectively) during the experiment. Growth With and Without Hydrologic Constraints Figure 4 displays two 7-day periods: June 12 to 19, a period of limited growth but large hydrologic fluctu- ations (Figure 4A, 4C, 4E, and 4G), and July 14 to 21, a period of consistent stem growth (Figure 4B, 4D, 4F, and 4H). The ZG model reveals only a single period of water deficit during the period of consistent growth (Figure 4F and 4H), which coincides with higher VPD and declining soil moisture (Figure 4D). Over this interval, some growth was experienced on each day, although this was minimal on July 19 following the only instance of water deficit. During the period of limited growth, the ZG model shows 3 intervals of ©2021 International Society of Arboriculture Precipitation (mm) 0 0 LO r-..ꖲ 0 LO LO C\i 0 0 0 z (.) Q) > 0 t5 0 0..
