Arboriculture & Urban Forestry (Formerly Journal of Arboriculture) Instructions to Authors General Policies There is no restriction on who may publish in Arboriculture & Urban Forestry, but subject matter must be directly related to arboriculture or urban forestry. Contributions should be (1) educational information that enlarges or broadens the back- ground of arborists or those evaluating the practice of arbo- riculture; (2) technical descriptions of procedures or equip- ment that will improve the quality or productivity of service provided by the tree care industry; or (3) scientific papers that aid in establishing the foundation of facts. Arboriculture & Urban Forestry is published for the arbo- ricultural and urban forestry community. Either in the intro- duction or in the conclusion explain, in nontechnical lan- guage, the current or potential value of the manuscript to the profession. All articles published in this journal are protected by copy- right, which covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, as well as all translation rights. No ma- terial published in this journal may be reproduced without first obtaining written permission from the International So- ciety of Arboriculture. Review Policy and Procedures. All manuscripts are sub- jected to peer review by three or more authorities. Recom- mendations from reviewers will be mailed to the author. The final decision to publish remains the prerogative of the Editor. Preparation of Manuscripts Manuscript Format. Consult recent issues of Arboricul- ture & Urban Forestry for format. Manuscripts will be printed in English with French, Spanish, and German ab- stracts provided by the editor. Submit three double-spaced copies of the manuscript to Dr. Robert Miller, 5613 Styron Dr., Oriental, NC 28571, U.S. Title. Keep the title brief but informative. Abstract. Submit an abstract with the paper. The abstract should not include procedures of the experiment but should provide a concise summary of results, not exceeding 200 words. Key Words. Include key terms to be used for indexing. Key terms should be in alphabetical order. Text Organization. Introductory statements should be in- cluded to provide background information and to state the objectives of the paper. The body of the text may be divided with up to three levels of subheadings. Footnotes are not permitted, except in tables. Names and Terms. Scientific names are to be italicized. First use of a common name in the abstract and in the body of the text will be followed by the scientific name in paren- theses. Use authorities as part of the scientific name of a species only in taxonomic works or when confusion is likely. Units of Measurement. All units of measurement are to be metric, followed by English units in parentheses. Tables and Figures. Keep tables to a minimum. Do not use ditto marks in tables or figures. Captions should ad- equately describe content so that tables and figures are un- derstandable when considered apart from the text. Figures or photographs do not need to be sized for the page. High- resolution digital images are required. Literature Cited. List references at the end of the article in alphabetical order by name of author. References in the text should be written as follows: (Smith 1988) for a single author; (Smith and Anderson 1998) for two authors; or (Smith et al. 1988) for three or more authors. When citing multiple sources for one point or fact, arrange the references chronologically, from earliest to latest: (Smith 1988; Jones 1990; Brown et al. 1998) Examples of commonly used literature citations are given below. Procedure After Acceptance After acceptance of an article, the author will be sent instruc- tions on supplying electronic copies of the manuscript. Manuscripts are edited for grammar and conciseness. Changes may be required to achieve uniformity of style, clar- ity of presentation, and economy of words.
