Arboriculture & Urban Forestry (Formerly Journal of Arboriculture) Instructions to Authors General Scope Arboriculture & Urban Forestry is an international Open Access journal that publishes high quality research results on scientif c and cultural aspects of selection, establishment, culture, maintenance, and function of individual trees, as well as on the structure, function, and management of forests in and around human settlements. Contributions will be considered in the cat- egories of original research articles, review articles, short communications, letters to the editor, and editorials. Subjects appropriate for submission include, among others, tree biology and physiology, entomology, pathology, horticulture, biomechanics, risk management, soil science, inventory and assessment, urban forest functions and benef ts, governance, planning and management of urban forests, and utility forestry. Review Policy and Procedures. To be considered for publication, manu- scripts must make a signif cant contribution to the advancement of knowl- edge in arboriculture and urban forestry and have broad applicability and interest to an international audience. Acceptance for publication is based on both editorial criteria and peer review. All submitted manuscripts are f rst assessed by the Editor-in-Chief. Manuscripts that are outside the scope of the journal are rejected without further review. Manuscripts deemed a good f t for the journal are assigned to an Associate Editor who solicits at least two reviews from experts in the relevant f eld of study. Recommenda- tions from reviewers are provided to the authors via email. Some revision is usually necessary after the reviews have been received, and f nal acceptance depends on satisfactory revisions. T e f nal decision on all manuscripts is made by the Editor-in-Chief. Submission of Manuscripts All manuscripts must be submitted to ScholarOne to be considered for review (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/auf). A manuscript number will be assigned to each new or revised manuscript; refer to this number in all subsequent correspondence. If you need to create an account, click on “Create an Account.” For technical assistance, click “Help” in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. You may also email Lindsey Mitchell, Managing Editor, at [email protected] for additional assistance. Preparation of Manuscripts Contributors are strongly encouraged to write in a readable style and include management implications of their research. Authors are encouraged to read the guidelines below carefully and consult recent issues of the journal. Sub- missions that do not follow the guidelines will be returned for correction. Full author guidelines are available online at https://auf.isa-arbor.com/page/ contribute/author-guidelines. Manuscript Format. Arboriculture & Urban Forestry follows the Council of Science Editors (CSE) style manual. All manuscripts must be submitted in standard English in either .DOC or .DOCX format. Double-space all text and use a readable font (at least 11 pt). Title. T e title of the paper should be a precise and concise description of the work performed and results obtained. Byline. AUF employs a double-blind review process. Reviewers do not know the author names, and the authors do not know the reviewer names. Please prepare your manuscript with author information (e.g., byline, addresses/af liations). T e information will be removed prior to the review process. Any identifying information in tables, f gures, headers, or footers will also be removed. Abstract. T e abstract should include a justif cation for the study, objectives, and a concise summary of signif cant data, major f ndings, and conclusions, not exceeding 250 words. T e abstract should be able to stand by itself without reference to the main text. Statements requiring the sup- port of literature citations should not be included. Key Words. Include additional key terms to be used for indexing that are not already present in the title or abstract. Key words should be in alphabetical order. Text Organization. T e body of the text may be divided with up to three levels of subheadings. Footnotes are not permitted, except in tables. For research papers, the text is normally organized into f ve sections: Introduc- tion, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion (separate or combined), and Conclusions. Literature Cited. List references at the end of the article in alphabetical order by name of author. References in the text should be written as fol- lows: for a single author (Smith 1988); for two authors (Smith and Ander- son 1998); or for three or more authors (Smith et al. 1988). When citing multiple sources for one point or fact, arrange the references chronologi- cally, from earliest to most recent (Smith 1988; Jones 1990; Brown et al. 1998). Include DOI links for all references where applicable. Tables and Figures. All tables and f gures must be cited in numerical order in the text. Place table titles and f gure captions together at the end of the manuscript. Captions should adequately describe content so that tables and f gures are understandable when considered apart from the text. Data should not be duplicated in tables and f gures. High-resolution digital images are required for f gures. Tables must be submitted as text. Procedure after Submission After submission, a conf rmation e-mail will be sent to all authors. Authors can also log in to ScholarOne any time to check the status of a manuscript. Decision letters are sent via email. Upon acceptance, authors will be asked to provide the f nal materials of their manuscript, including all completed Conf ict of Interest Forms. Timely publication is dependent upon all f les being delivered to the Edito- rial Of ce promptly. Authors will have an opportunity to review a proof of their article prior to online publication. Proofs should be checked carefully, as manuscripts are edited for grammar, journal style, and consistency across all materials. No rewriting may be done at the proof ng stage.
