4-: 1. ITA 2. HUN 3. GER 4. POL 5. FRA 6. URS After a fast start, the French crew hit several buoys. Tak ing advantage of this, Hungary maintained the lead until the 1,900 metres mark. Then, magnificently led by Moioli, the Italian crew, having strayed for a moment from their lane, pulled right away from the Hungarians. Thus did Moioli earn his fifth European title since 1947. 2x: 1. URS 2. GER 3. TCH 4. SUI 5. BEL 6. GER The defeat of the Soviet eight, title holders ever since their first appearance at the 1953 European champion ships, was a great surprise. The Czechoslovakians, hav ing reached the final via the previous day’s repechage, won, with an impressive turn of speed'. In third place un til 1,500 metres, they then produced their spurt, draw ing level with the French crew, who had been leading since the 250 metre mark. It was a very close finish. The Hungarians, who had beaten the French in the elimina tor, finished behind them, in third place. Stanislav Lusk and Jan Jindra won their third FISA tide. November 22nd—27th 1956 — Melbourne Gaines of the XVIth Olympiad Lake Wendouree at Ballarat was the regatta venue. This lake is normally calm. At any rate the wind could not in terrupt the regular race programme, because of the pro tection afforded by the surrounding reeds. There was room for five abreast rowing. The oarsmen were housed in rather spartan conditions about four kilometres from Lake Wendouree, either in small, six-bedroomed houses with a metal roofs or in twelve-bedroomed ones with as bestos ceilings; the latter accommodation being slightly less uncomfortable than the former. The president of FISA protested strongly about the conditions, but to no great effect. Preliminary heats 4 + : 10 started El: 1. ITA 2. URS 3. NZL Eli: 1. SWE 2. DEN 3. FIN Fill: 1. USA 2. AUS 3.
