August 3rd 1958 — FISA in Mourning Gaston Mullegg, who had been the life and soul of FISA since the ’20’s, fell victim to his latest passion. After hav ing been a successful participant in so many mechanical sports — motorcycling and car racing - and athletic ones — skiing and, of course, rowing - he had taken up flying. Having obtained his pilot’s licence in 1954, he immedi ately undertook long flights. And yet it was on the edge of his usual aerodrome in Lausanne on a sunny summer’s day that his fatal accident occurred. With him in the plane was Louis Patricot, the vice-president of the French federation and a member of the FISA technical commission. He was seriously injured. August 22nd—24th 1958 — Poznan 5th women’s European championships It was the second time that Poland had organised the FISA championships. In 1929, the regatta had been held in Bydgoscz. In 1958, it was in Poznan, or more precisely, the" tree-lined artificial lake of Malta, four kilometres from the town centre. Six lanes were buoyed at 100 metre intervals. There were fixed, protruding starting platforms. Eliminators and repechages 4 +: 9 crews El: 1. URS 2. ROM 3. DEN 4.P0L 5. HUN Eli: 1. TCH 2. GER 3. SWE 4. YUG RI: 1. ROM 2. POL 3. SWE RII: 1. HUN 2. August 27th 1958 — Poznan 54th ordinary FISA congress Present: 52 delegates from 23 federations In the beautiful municipal council chamber of Poznan’s new town hall (Nowy Ratusz), Jacques Spreux, the vice- president of FISA, opened the congress. Obviously very moved, he paid hommage to President Mullegg, who had been taken from them too soon. Around a raised dais draped in black crepe and with the flags of the town, of Poland and of FISA behind them, sat the interim president, with Gaston Walbaum (ARG), John Carlin (USA), Ralph Jeffreys (AUS), Stephen Marchewski (POL), all of them FISA vice-presidents, and the secre tary-general, Charles Riolo. Feeling that the spirit of the departed president still occupied the presidential chair, the delegates decided to close the ordinary FISA con gress, as a mark of respect. An extraordinary congress would take place in Vienna (AUT), on November 22nd and 23rd. August 29th—31st 1958 — Poznan 48th men’s European championships Preliminary heats 4 + : 12 started EL 1. GER 2.
