A compromise was suggested to the Adriatic and Czechoslovakian clubs which would allow them to take part alternately in the various FISA championships. The 1897 European championships were allocated to Bohemia. Rowing; the most athletic of sports In a boat, all the muscles, yes, all of them, are exercised: the neck and shoulder muscles at the catch, those of the lower back and legs during the propulsive phase, those of the chest, the arms and the wrist during the extraction and hands-away , those of the abdomen and yet again of the lower back and the legs during the recovery. “This is sport at its best. Could there be a more comprehensive ex ercise?” Such is the opinion of Ed. Fleutiaux, in “L’Aviron,” March 21st 1896. The races 4 +: 4 started 1. FRA 2. BEL 3. ITA 4. Lausanne”) Ben Longchamp, a former Swiss student from Cambridge, ended an outstanding career with a splendid victory in the single sculls. September 6th 1896 — Geneva 4th men’s European championships The programme of these championships, organised by the “Societe Nautique de Geneve” and, in the very first year of its foundation, by the Swiss Rowing Federation: 2.30pm “Prix de la France”: four oars with coxswain. 3.30pm “Prix de la Belgique”: single sculls. 4.15pm: “Prix de l’Adriatique”: pair oars with coxswain. 5pm: “Prix de lTtalie”: eight oars with coxswain. The races of the official championships would be inter spersed with those of the local regatta, to allow oarsmen who were competing in more than one event in the offi cial championships to have time to recover. Spacious and comfortable terraced grandstands were set up on the “jetee des Paquis,” in front of the Hotel Nation al, where the finish was situated. The start was opposite Pregny, at some distance from the bank. Men in stake boats 25 metres apart held the sterns of the competitors’ boats. Because of the wind and the depth of the lake at that point (30 - 40 metres), it was often necessary to rea lign the boats at the start several times. Nearly 200 people, the VIP’s - possibly the organisers - followed the races from a steamer anchored at a suitable distance from the course. There was a considerable crowd on the bank. Two special trains had brought near ly 2,000 Italians. Another had arrived from Lyons. As for the Swiss, they were legion. The boatbuilders, Dossu- net, Lein and Seguin, were also present. The weather was uncertain. Occasional showers spoilt the spectators’ pleasure. Towards the end of the regatta, mercifully, the sun reigned supreme. There was a cons tant west wind of varying intensity, which meant a head wind during all the races. There were fairly large waves for the first two thirds of the course. They became progressively smaller, almost dying out towards the fin ish. This led to frequent steering errors, and the courses steered by some of the coxes were far from straight. 14 B. September 8th 1897 — Pallanza 6th FISA congress Present: 9 delegates from 5 federations A fifth event, the double sculls, i.e., two scullers without a coxswain, was to be added to the European champion ships programme from 1898 onwards. At the suggestion of the president of the Belgian federa tion, Oscar Gregoire, the Statutes would specify that in future no federation or affiliated club might organise or recognize a regatta bearing the name of International, Continental or European championships unless authorised to do so by FISA.
