Although they appeared to be in favour of becoming af filiated to FISA, the officials of the DRY were hesitating over the matter of the payment of travelling expenses, which they did not allow, and over the question of the ad mission of the Alsace-Lorraine championships commit tee into the DRV. The suggestion of replacing a standard annual subscrip tion fee for each federation by one calculated in propor tion to the number of clubs affiliated to the national feder ation was rejected. On the other hand, the reserve fund being judged sufficient, and there being no need for in creasing the capital - halcyon days! - the 200 francs sub scription was reduced to 150 francs per nation. First foreign victory in the Grand Challenge Cup at Henley The “Club Nautique” — “Sport Nautique” composite from Ghent has become the first foreign crew to win this trophy, first competed for in 1839. The European champions’ success reflects favourably on the Belgian federation and on FISA. In recognition of this achievement, the 1906 congress has, therefore, awarded the gold medal, which is usually reserved for European champions, to the two coaches of the winning'crew, Julian de Dryver and Emile Wauters. The races 4 + : 3 started 1. BEL 2. ITA 3. FRA The Belgians got off to a fast start, striking 40. The Italians attempted to stay in touch. Half way through the race, however, they had dropped back by three lengths. They then redoubled their efforts, gaining on their oppo nents, and drawing level 100 metres from the fine. September 9th 1906 — Pallanza 14th men’s European championships As in 1897, FISA’s best oarsmen gathered for their an nual championships on Lake Maggiore, in its magnifi cent setting at the foot of the Alps. BEL - SUI, ALS-LOR (scratched) Gaston Delaplane justified the hopes placed in him the previous year, when sheer bad luck had caused him to finish only second. For the first 500 metres he seemed ill at ease. He made sure of his victory in the second quart er of the race. To counter the attack of the Italian, Brunialti, who had come to within a length of him, he in creased his rate of striking and continued at 36 until he was 50 metres past the finish and assured of his win. 2 +: 3 started 1. ITA 2. BEL 3. FRA Victory went to the pair from Venice, Olgeni and del Guidice, who beat the famous pair, Visser and Molmans.
