It is, in fact, the first time that it has been suggested that the races form the theoretical side of rowing, whereas official dinners and other receptions make up the practical side. It is really sad that this outlook is not more common among the row ing fraternity. We should then reach the point where we would dis pense with those boring rowing races, which some people persist in wishing to organise, usually to coincide with the European champi onships. Then, all that we need retain of the latter would be the es sential part - the dinners and other receptions.
