Any crew causing two false starts would be eliminated. Denmark’s national vest was to be white with a horizontal red band. In memory of his late lamented brother, the former FISA president, Edmond Baud offered a magnificent bronze designed by a famous Italian sculptor, to be known as the “Eugene Baud memorial prize”. In accordance with his wish, this prize would be awarded from 1929 onwards, and was to be kept in perpetuity by the federation which won the European coxed four championship either three times in a row, or on five non-consecutive occasions. The wish to give encouragement to women’s rowing was expressed unanimously, but the formation of an indepen dent international women’s federation was rejected. August 17th—18th 1929 — Bydgoszcz 30th men’s European championships A popular success: 27,000 tickets had been sold for the grandstands and official enclosures. People thronged the banks. 4,700 cars filled the car park. This figure gives some idea of the huge site at the disposal of the or ganisers. There must have been 40,000 to 50,000 peo ple at Legnowo. The course was dead straight with three buoyed lanes, each for two boats. There was a hut for the finish judges, telephones and telegraph. At the start a fixed pontoon spanned the whole width of the course. At each starting position, a man on a protruding plank held the boats by the stern. The starter stood in the centre of the platform. Eliminators and repechages Eliminating heats were needed for the 4 + and 8 +.
