Finals For the finals, the “grandstand train” was packed, with about 1,000 people on board. The weather was dull and wet. Some 5,000 spectators occupied the grandstands built on the lakeside. The finish judges, along with the timekeepers, were installed in a large pavilion built out on the lake, inaccessible to the general public. 4 +: 1. ITA 2. FRA 3. YUG 4. HUN 5. GER 6. August 14th 1935 — Berlin 38th FISA congress Present: 34 delegates from 13 federations, meeting in the main function room of the Central Hotel. In order to avoid accidents, hard rubber balls were now to be attached to the bows of boats. The European championships would not be held in 1936, as the Olympic regatta would be taking place in Europe that year. Contact with the two British federations, the NARA, which abided by EISA’s rules, and the ARA, containing the largest clubs, was re-established, in an effort to per suade them to reach an agreement so that they might submit a joint request for affiliation to FISA. The Sta tutes, Rules of Racing and Regulations for the European championships were re-issued. August 16th—18th 1935 — Berlin Griinau 36th men’s European championships One year before it hosted the Olympic regatta, the course at Griinau was the venue for the best FISA oars men. The improvements made for the Olympic Games were finished, and ready to be tried out. The course had been dredged to a uniform minimum depth of 3 metres. Anti-wind and wave screens, as well as buoys, had been installed. The course had been marked out by cones and barges, anchored at 80 metre intervals. To help the coxswains and facilitate the steering of coxswain less boats, four wires displaying large numbers were strung across the course. It would thus be easier to steer straight. In the interests of providing good food and comfortable lodging at a reasonable price for the oarsmen, the Ger man federation had acquired, through the Society of German Students Abroad, the use of Koepenick castie, less than four kilometres from the course. The accom modation would be much appreciated. Eliminators and repechages The first two crews in each eliminating heat went forward to the final. The remainder went to the repechages, the winners of which went forward to the final. 4 + : 9 entered El: 1. GER 2. ITA 3. HUN 4. FRA 5. BEL Eli: 1. YUG 2. DEN 3. TCH 4. ESP R: 1. FRA 2. HUN 3.
