(These topics will be divided by Author Teams 4 and 5) Findings will be presented and discussed in an open workshop format, and commentary will be invited from workshop attendees. The final white paper will be published in the DFI Journal and presented at the International Foundation Congress and Equipment Exposition (IFCEE) in San Antonio, Texas, March 2015. Please attend to add your voice to the discussion. INAUGURAL MEETING New Subsurface Characterization for Deep Foundations Committee Trustee Liaison: Bernie Hertlein GEI Consultants 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, October 23, 2014 Bernie Hertlein of GEI Consultants will lead the initial activities of the new committee as its board of trustees liaison. The specific goals of the committee will be defined at the inaugural meeting and all attendees will be encouraged to share their input. Committee members will be accepted and a chair, vice chair and secretary appointed after the first meeting. Members interested in serving in these roles are encouraged to contact Bernie ([email protected]) or Mary Ellen Bruce ([email protected]). The intent of the committee will be to discuss and define subsurface character- ization needs from the point of view of the entire geotechnical/foundation industry so that correct and comprehensive infor- mation is provided to the end users (designers and contractors) and project change condition issues/debates are minimized. The committee will liaise with associated committees from other organizations and agencies to broaden the discussion within the engineering community. The ultimate goal is to find the common ground that allows the entire geotechnical industry and all project participants to minimize disagreement during construction, align expectations, and improve communication and understanding among related parties. Seepage Control Working Group (SCWG) Meeting Chairs: David Paul USACE Risk Management Center and Gianfranco Di Cicco GD Consulting, LLC 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Thursday, October 23, 2014 At the Seepage Control Working Group (SCWG) meeting, group members will review the final draft of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Engineering Manual on Seepage Control for Dams and Levees. There will also be a brief review of the successful workshop on Levee and Coastal Restoration (February 2014) and plans for the upcoming International Symposium on Seepage Control and Remediation to be held April 2016, in Denver, Colo., which is being organized jointly by DFI and the U.S. Society on Dams (USSD). Preliminary plans and calls for invited speakers and abstracts will be discussed. The group will briefly review the recently passed Water Resources Reform & Development Act of 2014 and its implications on the foundation industry. The SCWG serves the dam and levee community by connecting owners/agencies with DFI contractors, consultants, researchers/academics and manufacturers/suppliers to improve communication, align expectations and define common goals among all parties. Technical discussion and exchange between agencies and practitioners increase understanding of priorities and constraints, and the DFI SCWG is aimed at being the forum for these discussions.
