Wysockey The Sunrise Powerlink project involved construction of San Diego Gas and Electric’s (SDG&E’s) new 117 mile (188 km) 500/230 kilovolt transmission line from Imperial County to San Diego County, Calif. The project received numerous industry awards for excellence including the C. William Bermingham Innovation Award, which recognized the innovative use of prefabricated steel micropile caps to increase safety, accelerate project schedule and minimize the project carbon footprint. DFI’s Outstanding Project Award (OPA) and ISM’s World Cup of Micropiles Challenge Award honored the project as a whole and its positive outcome and industry example. 70 Analysis of CDSM for Highway Bridges Wei-Yu Chen, Ph.D., P.E., Andrew Bro, P.E., G.E., Shahriar Vahdani, Ph.D., P.E., and Andy Herlache, P.E., G.E. The Presidio Parkway project in California will reconstruct approximately 1.6 miles (2.6 km) of highway connecting the Golden Gate Bridge to the city of San Francisco. Cement deep soil mixing (CDSM) ground improvement was considered to reinforce the bridge foundations and reduce pier deflections. FLAC 3D and PLAXIS 3D analyses were conducted to evaluate the dynamic response of the soil-pier-CDSM system and to optimize the CDSM dimensions and replacement ratios. 28 Sunrise Powerlink: An Innovation in Foundation Design Nick Salisbury and Steve Davidow, P.E., S.E. 65 Member Profile: Brian Isherwood, P.Eng., Principal, Isherwood Associates: Deep Thinker With a Love of the Arts DEEP FOUNDATIONS • SEPT/OCT 2014 • 19 O T N A S D I N N U S T O I F T U E P T E E D
