PEOPLE & COMPANIES GEI Consultants, Inc. announced in April that Bernhardt (Bernie) Hertlein has joined the firm in its Libertyville, Ill., office. A Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) expert with global experience, Hertlein will contribute to the company’s national growth in in-situ instrumentation and non-destructive testing and evaluation of construction materials. Prior to joining GEI, Hertlein served as the head of the NDT group at STS and AECOM from 1998 to 2013. He was responsible for NDT and geophysical measurement technology used for construction quality control, structural integrity and condition assessment, and monitoring of remedial and rehabilitation works. He specializes in developing new applications for NDT methods, designing or building required hardware, and writing appropriate software. Hertlein is secretary of ACI committee 228 and chair of commit- tee 336, is immediate past-chairman of ASTM C9-64, a director of the Association of Drilled Shaft Contractors/The Interna- tional Association of Foundation Drilling, and a trustee of the Deep Foundations Institute (DFI). He is also past chairman of the DFI Testing and Evaluation Committee. Hertlein is a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute and earned the 2009 Outstanding Service Award from the ADSC-IAFD for significant contributions to the deep foundations industry. Frank Rausche, Ph.D., P.E., founder of GRL Engi- neers, Inc., president for many years and currently a principal and consul- tant to Pile Dynamics, Inc., was named a Diplomate, Geotechnical Engineering, by the Academy of Geo- Professionals at a ceremony during Geo- Congress 2013 in San Diego, Calif., in March. Garland Likins, P.E., p r e s i d e n t o f P i l e Dynamics, Inc., has been announced as the winner of this year’s Robert B. Cummings Distinguished Leadership Award from the Cleveland Technical Societies Council (CTSC), founded in 1942. The award is given annually to an individual associated with engineering or technical work, and who has contributed greatly to the advancement and welfare of the engineering or technical professions. Likins’ award was presented in May at the 67th Annual CTSC Scholarship and Achievement Awards Dinner. During that event CTSC also presented $20,000 in scholarships to Northeast Ohio students who plan to pursue science-based careers. The Cleveland Section of ASCE funded part of the scholarship in Likins’ honor. Kurt R. Fraese, L.G. is the new president of ASFE/The Ge opro - f e s s i o n a l B u s i n e s s Association (GBA). Fraese is GBA’s 43rd president, and the CEO of GeoEngineers, Inc., a 300- person earth-science and technology firm based in Seattle, Wash. A 1982 graduate of Humboldt State University, with a B.A. degree in geology, he has been a consultant in the energy, development, transportation, federal-government, and water-and- natural-resources markets since beginning his career in 1983 with Woodward-Clyde Consultants. He joined GeoEngineers in 1988 and became CEO in March 2007. He has served as project manager and/or principal in charge of more than 1,200 site studies, as well as a qualified expert in a variety of dispute-resolution proceedings. BAUER-Pi l e co Inc . promoted Jean Wehbe, P.E., to be a BAUER Dril- ling Rig Representative for the Southeast Region of the U.S. including Flor- ida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas. He had been working in the Method Development Department, 86 • DEEP FOUNDATIONS • JULY/AUG 2013 providing technical support for the sales personnel and business partners, and assisting clients with different methods and applications of BAUER equipment. Wehbe worked as a geotechnical project engineer for four years while pursuing a M.S. in civil engineering. After he received his degree, he was recruited by BAUER Maschinen GmbH and completed technical training at the company’s headquar ter s in Schrobenhausen, Germany before starting at BAUER-Pileco in Houston, Texas. Mike Minihan has been promoted to BAUER Drilling Rig Represen- tative for the Western Region of the U.S., including Alaska, Ari- zona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Wash- ington and Wyoming. Minihan has been with BAUER for nine years, working for KLEMM Bohrtechnik. He started with BAUER Manufacturing in Conroe, Texas. At BMC he started with the KLEMM Assembly Group; building the machines and then became the warehouse manager. Previous to BAUER companies he worked in envi ronmental dr i l l ing, cone penetrometer testing, water well drilling and well development. Rosa Castro-Krawiec joined Jacobs Associates’ Boston office as a senior associate. She is a struc- tural engineer with 29 years of experience in structural design production, engineering services during construction and project management. Her work includes the design and construction of buildings, as well as underground structures for trans- portation, environmental, civil, industrial, institutional and high technology facilities, throughout the U.S. and internationally. She has a degree in civil engineering from University of Massachusetts, and a masters degree in structural engineering from Northeastern University.
