Malcolm Drilling Company, Inc. performed dewatering, ground improve- ment, and constructed a water-tight secant pile wall as shoring support for an underground parking structure. The excavation had cuts up to 43 ft (13.1 m) in depth, and was bounded by city streets as well as the light rail on its perimeter. Although abundant, existing obstructions and underground site features were managed well by the on-site staff who sacrificed work space in order to complete the project. Siegel, P.E., G.E. Micropiles were used for support of a precast segmental bridge along the new scenic parkway in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains. As part of on-going research at the Missouri University of Science and Technology, select micropiles were instrumented with strain gages during installation. The research was funded, in part, by the DFI Committee Project Fund through the ADSC/DFI joint Micropile Committee. 57 Member Profile: Daniel Dragone, CEO of Bauer- Pileco: Charismatic Leader and Dedicated Family Man DEEP FOUNDATIONS • JULY/AUG 2014 • 3 O T N A S D I N N U S T O I F T U E P T E E D
