DFI Educational Trust Short Named Trustee Emeritus Dick Short Dick Short, former chair of the DFI Educa- tional Trust, was appointed as a trustee emeritus of the DFI Educational Trust Board of Trustees. This non-voting category o f t rus t e e s wa s recently created by the Trust board to honor former chairpersons and board members and provide a means for these individuals to continue participating by sharing their wisdom, experience and advice with the board. Short was a founding member of the DFI Educational Trust and served as its first chairman, from the organization’s inception in 2006 until 2010. He continued to serve as a trustee until his retirement from the board in 2012. Short has been a tireless worker in support of the Trust’s growth as well as a dedicated advocate for engineering students. Last year he retired as a faculty member at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was the advisor of DFI’s student chapter. Trustees Attend Scholarship Ceremonies On April 5, Trustee Rudy Frizzi represented the DFI Educational Trust at a scholarship awards ceremony held by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. At the event, three students received scholarship awards totaling $12,500 from the Trust’s Charles J. Berkel Memorial Scholarship Fund. Trustee Tracy Brettmann attended the University of Houston’s Cullen College of Engineering scholarship ceremony on May 2, where $12,500 in awards, also from the Berkel Fund, was distributed among eight engi- neering students. The DFI Educational Trust’s Charles J. Berkel Memorial Scholarship Fund awards $50,000 in scholarships annually to deserving civil engineering students at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, University of Houston, University of California, Berkeley and Auburn University. The fund was formerly known as the “Berkel & Company Contractors, Inc. Scholarship Fund” and was renamed the “Charles J. Berkel Memorial Scholarship Fund” at the request of the Berkel company after the death of Charles Berkel in November 2013. John O’Malley Scholarship Fund Receives Donation Pledge The Trust received a written pledge from Equipment Corporation of America for a $25,000 donation to the John O’Malley Scholarship Fund.
