PEOPLE & COMPANIES ILF Consultants, Inc. announced the appoint- ment of a new leadership team effective January 1, 2014. Dr. Conrad W. Felice was appointed president/ CEO, and is joined by James A. Morrison (past president of DFI) as exe- cutive vice president. Felice and Morrison each bring over 30 years of expertise to ILF and have complementary and overlapping capabilities. This is coupled with a depth of industry know- ledge to advance ILF’s core competencies of tunnel and underground systems, geotechnics, and foundation engineering applied to the infrastructure, energy, water, and mining and natural resources markets. Fred H. Kulhawy, Ph.D., P.E., G.E., Dist.M.ASCE, received ASCE’s Martin S. K a p p F o u n d a t i o n Engineering Award for his significant contributions to analysis and design of foundations and for pioneering work on geotechnical uncer- tainty leading to rational reliability-based foundation design. He also was named an ASCE Geo-Institute Hero for his contribu- tions to the geo-profession. Professor emeritus of Civil/Geotechnical Engineering at Cornell University and a consulting geotechnical engineer, Kulhawy’s teaching and research has focused primarily on foundations and soil-structure interaction, soil and rock behavior, and geotechnical computer and reliability applications. He has authored over 380 published technical papers and reports, has given more than 1,480 lectures around the world, and received numerous awards for his work, among them ASCE’s Karl Terzaghi Award and Norman Medal. Kulhawy has been a long-time member and supporter of DFI, contributing to short courses and other technical activities, as well as presenting the 2007 Hal Hunt Lecture and the 2011 Lecture for the Annual DFI Educational Trust Gala. 100 • DEEP FOUNDATIONS • MAY/JUN 2014 Seth L. Pearlman, P.E., D . G E , M . A S C E , president and CEO of Me n a rd USA, wa s selected by the American Society of Civil Engineers to receive the 2014 Henry L. Michel Award for Industry Advancement of Research. Pearlman was presented with the award at the OPAL Gala on March 20, 2014 in Arlington, VA. The Henry L. Michel Award for Industry Advancement of Research recognizes dedication, vision and leadership in advancing research in the design and construction industry. It was established in 1996 to honor Henry L. Michel, past chairman of the board of directors of the Civil Engineering Research Foundation. Pearlman has more than 30 years of experience in the geotechnical industry. He earned a B.S. and an M.S. in Civil Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and is a registered P.E. in Pennsylvania and Virginia. He is a member of the Geo-Institute, American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Concrete Institute (ACI), American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE), Design Build Institute of America (DBIA), past president of the Deep Foundations Institute (DFI), Engineers Society of Western Pennsylvania (ESWP) and The Moles. He serves on an Advisory Council to the Carnegie Mellon University Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Paul Gi ldea joined Langan International as an associate in the New York City office, where he will serve as senior director of geotechnical and foundation engineering for projects in the Middle East and other locations around the world. Gildea brings extensive experience on foundations, deep excavations and other geotechnical processes in the Far East, Middle East, Australia and Europe. Jacobs Associates wel- comed senior associate Wayne Lindsay in Dec- ember 2013. He spear- headed the opening of the firm’s new office in St. Louis, Mo., which will support tunneling and underground infrastructure projects with the Metropolitan Sewer District of St. Louis. Lindsay has been in the consulting industry for more than 25 years, with a focus on water and wastewater infrastructure projects. A large focus for Lindsay has been wet weather programs. He has been engaged in client develop- ment, strategic planning, teaming, and pro- posal and procurement efforts on several controlled sewer overflow (CSO) programs. Jacobs Associates was awarded an Owner’s Engineer services contract for preliminary design and construction services from the Sacramento Municipal Utilities District (SMUD) on its proposed Iowa Hill pumped‐storage project. If constructed, Iowa Hill would be a 400 megawatt pumped-storage hydroelectric facility located near the town of Camino, roughly 50 miles (80 km) east of Sacramento. The team consists of Jacobs Associates (prime), GEI Consultants, HDR Engineering, AF‐Consult of Switzerland, Carlton Engineering, AMEC, IEC Corporation, Northwest Hydraulic Consultants, Stillwater Sciences, Ascent Environmental, Crux Subsurface and Foxfire Constructors. Nicholson Construction increased its presence in the southeast by opening a new office in Tampa, Fla. The Tampa location serves as the base for the company’s newly established Southeastern Region, which includes Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Nicholson has performed various works throughout Florida, most recently in and around the Miami area. The company will maintain its satellite office in Miami, while the Tampa location serves as the region’s primary office. The Tampa
