Hayward Baker Inc. was awarded a $41 million contract in connection with the City of Seattle’s Elliott Bay seawall repair and replacement project. The project involves the repair and replacement of a large section of a seawall stretching along Seattle’s downtown riverfront. Constructed between 1911 and 1936, the seawall has deteriorated over time, making it increasingly vulnerable to storm and earthquake damage. The contract calls for Hayward Baker to construct a grid of approximately 5,700 soilcrete columns at depths of up to 85 ft (26 m) in order to provide seismic stability and foundation support for a new seawall. To work around existing timber piles, Hayward Baker will employ a process of dynamic planning to survey predrilled holes, identify obstructions, and to revise the grid pattern as the work proceeds. The Seattle downtown waterfront area is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. Hayward Baker Inc. was the recipient of the Keystone Award from the Associated General Contractors of St. Louis (AGC). The award was presented to Hayward Baker in the “Specialty Contractor/Subcontractor Project Under $1 Million” category for performing micropile and compaction grouting work on the St. Louis Central Library, a 100-year-old historic structure located in downtown St. Louis, Mo. The award was presented to Jeffrey R. Hill, P.E., (pictured on left) senior engineer and Gregory A. Terri, P.E., (pictured right) area manager of Hayward Baker’s St. Louis area office at AGC’s 2013 Construction Awards Gala held on November 14, 2013 in downtown St. Louis.
