12 Sharp HealthCare Spotlight: Transforming Vision Into Reality When Monique McBride, RN, Lead Clinical Nurse of Endoscopy at Sharp Chula Vista, joined Sharp’s Leaders4Leaders (L4L) Nursing Mentorship Program, she set a bold goal: Create additional space to care for more patients . Her mentor, Annette Austin, MSN, RN, CEN, Emergency Department manager at Sharp Memorial Hospital, guided her through the six-month program, which pairs experienced and developing nurse leaders through a rigorous matching process designed to foster compatibility and diversity . Guided by Sharp’s Leader Capability Model, L4L strengthens leadership development and advances Sharp’s commitment to an exceptional workplace culture . Monique’s project aimed to increase weekly procedure volumes and reduce wait times for essential screenings like colonoscopies — a critical need in the South Bay community — by converting an underused storage space into a functional patient care room by September 2025 . Challenges included financial constraints, workflow redesign and gaining leadership support . Through regular L4L meetings, Annette shared resources like Gantt chart templates and offered strategic advice drawn from her experience . Together, they developed a Lean Six Sigma ARMI (Approver, Resource Person, Member, Interested Party) tool to list and categorize stakeholders . They then leveraged internal resources and secured buy-in from physicians and leadership, including approval from Executive Vice President of Hospital Operations and Chief Strategy Officer Scott Evans . Monique kept costs within budget by repurposing equipment such as endoscopy tools, workstations on wheels, and a Pyxis machine . By August 2025, the new room was operational, enabling additional cases . Monique tracked volumes, relative value units and patient satisfaction to measure impact . Monique reflects: “This project taught me that with the right guidance and collaboration, even the biggest challenges can become opportunities to improve patient care . Leaders4Leaders gave me the confidence and tools to make it happen .” Monique McBride, BSN, RN, Lead Clinical Nurse, Endoscopy, Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center Monique McBride, BSN, RN, with her mentor Annette Austin, MSN, RN, CEN (Manager, Emergency Department, Sharp Memorial Hospital)
