The town has all services including a Visitor Information Centre and Craft Shop and an Opportunity shop as well as a range of accommodation. There is a heritage trail around town with buildings of note signposted. DATE An important industry in Wilmington at the turn of the century was the manufacture of the Dignan stripper (a grain reaping machine). At its peak forty men were employed and the strippers were distributed far and wide. Wilmington is central to a rural farming community with wheat and barley cropping, sheep and more recently olives. The town borders Mount Remarkable National Park. Attractions: ALLIGATOR GORGE has some of the most spectacular and colourful rock formations in the Flinders Ranges. Views of the steep cliffs of the Gorge are amazing along with the crystal clear water of the creek. There are several walking trails. Turn-off opposite the entrance to Beautiful Valley Caravan Park. A 12 kms sealed road winds through magnificent scenery to a car park. An entry fee is applicable per car. MOUNT MARIA WALKING TRAIL is a pleasant 2 hour walk, well signposted with sites of interest. Turnoff on the left in Wilmington, when heading north. HANCOCK’S LOOKOUT is 4.5 kms from town, on the Horrocks Pass (Port Augusta) Road, signposted on the left. A further 7 kms to the Lookout is rewarded with extensive views over the surrounding countryside all the way to the sea.
