The railway came through in 1880 and the town was named after the Commissioner for Crown Lands. There is a surprising number of services in such a small town. Copley has always had a large surge of pride and the town’s catchcry “Catch ya at Copley” is well known. With the closure of the Leigh Creek Mine site, it was noted that the Copley Retention Dam has natralised and is home to several species of rare birds. The blue billed duck, elegant parrot, musk duck, Australasian darter and great crested grebe are just some of the species that were discovered by 12 experienced Birds SA birders recently. Thousands of birds of 68 different species were spotted during the two-day observation. Local naturalist Anne-Maree Taranto said the area has proven to be a flourishing habitat – for land, shore and water birds alike. “And in times of drought, rarified water sources in outback South Australia become vitally important to the survival of wildlife,” she said. Many Community groups worked to ensure it remains as a positive legacy of the mine. The proposal put forward was approved by the Department of State Development.
