WILLIAM CREEK SA 5710 Tom Kruse Outback Mailman HERE IS A REPRESENTATION OF YOUR ADVERT TO APPEAR IN THE AUSTRALIA’S EXPLORERS’ WAY BOOK TOM KRUSE was the mailman on the Birdsville Track for more than twenty years. From 1936 he made the run every fortnight from Marree to Birdsville, over some 520 kms. He was a lifeline delivering everything from letters, groceries, medical supplies, fuel and even furniture to the isolated settlements and stations. He kept people in touch with the outside world. Tom made running repairs to his truck – it was said he could “get a tin of bolts to go.” He negotiated sand dunes and flooded creeks at times, loading and unloading tons of stores to ferry his cargo across. He was strong and could lift a 44 gallon drum of fuel onto the back of the truck. He carried lollies and children would run to open gates and greet him. Tom came to fame in the iconic ‘The back of beyond’ John Heyer documentary - the film won the Grand Prize in the Venice Film Festival in 1954. His best- known mail truck, a 1936 Leyland Badger, finally broke down and was abandoned at Pandie Pandie station in 1957. Much later it was rescued and restored and now has pride of place in the Birdwood Motor Museum.
