ROXBY DOWNS ROXBY DOWNS is a modern town built to support nearby BHP’s huge Olympic Dam Mine which produces and processes copper, uranium, gold and silver. It is 565kms north of Adelaide and 85kms from the Stuart Highway through a changing outback landscape. The town is set on a sloping plain south of the mine, surrounded by red dirt of the desert and framed by blue skies. Visitors notice the relaxed atmosphere of Roxby, as well as the great sense of community. Roxby has a very young and transient population of around 4,500 people. Visitors are surprised by the modern services and facilities on offer with the town having celebrated their 30th birthday in 2018. It is a great spot to fill up / prepare for outback adventures. Borefield Road leads to the Oodnadatta Track, where you can explore William Creek, Marree, Lake Eyre or travel north along the Track. Arid Recovery Reserve is dedicated to the restoration of Australia’s arid lands and wildlife. Arid Recovery was initiated in 1997 and centres around a 123 square km fenced enclosure where feral cats, rabbits and foxes were removed. The complete protection allows regeneration of native vegetation and introduction of locally extinct mammals (greater bilby, burrowing bettong, stick- nest rat, quolls and western barred bandicoot). And there are now 15 times as many native hopping mice inside the reserve than outside.
