The Minor Issue of the Lock Looking at the door, I notice the lock is not installed. I guess that is part of the job my friend forgot to mention. He only asked if I could install the “keypad,” but we install locks. I’ve never even heard of the brand, De- sign Hardware, so I grabbed the template and about an hour later the lock was installed. Before installing it though, I noticed it was always unlocked. Sure enough, they ordered the lock fail safe. This means the lock requires power to keep it locked, not a lot of power, but using power almost 24-7 seems like a waste, so I converted it to fail secure and confirmed the correct handing. Another thing I noticed was the lack of a door closer. What good is access control if the door doesn’t close and latch automati- cally? Installing a Norton BF1601 solved that problem. Most of the controls in this price range “This means the lock requires power to keep it locked, not a lot of power, but using power almost 24-7 seems like a waste, so I converted it to fail secure and confirmed the correct handing.” simply allow opening with a code or card, so this is a step up from the bottom-end controls. It records the events with a time stamp, but perhaps the only thing I would have liked to see in this control is the abil- ity to limit users by time. But at this price point, perhaps I want too much, and to be honest, I don’t oſten have customers wanting to limit the access times as much as wanting the recording of the event. As luck would have it, as I completed this install, another customer wanted a similar system, only this time with card access instead of keypad. It has a few twists to the install, so look for that article in a couple months. reg Perry, CML, CPS, is a ertified master locksmith nd certified professional afe technician, working n all phases of locksmith- g.
